my friend does not get truely drunk,i say this becouse her drinking doesent seem to effect her abbility to reason, drive,or care for her family.but she consumes at least a half bottle of wine with dinner every night.she is about 5,1 and 120 pounds, and a half bottle or about 5 full glasses has no detectable effect.is she a heavy drinker or an alcoholic, or am i nieve and overreacting.
You're considered an alcoholic if you consume either more than 3 drinks per day or more than 21 drinks in a week. There are also people called "functioning alcoholics." These are people who can consume large quantities of alcohol and still seem reasonably normal. They are still alcoholics. Seeming and being reasonably normal doesn't change what's going on inside the body. When you consume more Alcohol in your body than it can metabolize safely, your cells begin to burst and die. This is what the feeling of being very "tipsy" or "drunk" is. People can still act normal but the cells are dying. And you don't have to ever get drunk to be an alcoholic. Alcoholism is just when a person is addicted to consuming alcohol, regardless of the amount. Hope this helps. I've seen what over drinking can do to people. If you think she is then try to help. Check out AA and ALANON (ALANON is for family and friends of alcoholics)
A good way to test it to see the you can go one month without drinking. If you can't, you may be an alcoholic.
