Christians: What is Jesus saying in this Parable?
Matthew 9:14-17
14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often,[a] but Your disciples do not fast?”
15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
our minds are scattered, disordered. we kowtow to our own base attitudes and desires. ("the wolf, the snake, the hog, in me not wanting" - Walt Whitman, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry).
A part of us may suspect that there's more to life than what we see. And for those people, finding out what that is is the most important thing in the world for them. They find a school that can show them how to become conscious.
But in order to become conscious, our mind must be UNIFIED. How much unity can a person have who trips blindly over a footstool, becomes angry when he is shortchanged or fails to notice when he irritates his wife? Any unity HE thinks he has exists only in his imagination.
And thus, he must CHANGE. If he wants to experience higher states of consciousness, he must CHANGE HIS LEVEL OF BEING.
New wine is a higher level of consciousness. An old wineskin is his old self. Change requires not just ordinary efforts but SUPER efforts. As well as knowledge, others around him who are ALSO working for change...and the help of some person who has already acquired a PERMANENT PRINCIPLE OF CONSCIOUSNESS within himself. A person who is AWAKE.
